Questions Candidates Should Ask About a Leadership Role

Use the interview to understand the assignment, the decision environment, and the support behind the title.

A conversation about a project

A leadership interview is also your chance to evaluate the organization. Beyond learning about responsibilities, you need to understand the environment in which you would be expected to deliver. Thoughtful questions can reveal where the role is clear and where important assumptions remain unresolved.

Ask about the assignment

“What needs to be different one year after this person starts?” invites the hiring team to describe outcomes rather than repeat the job description. Follow up by asking which priorities are most urgent and why the position is open now.

Listen for consistency across conversations. Different perspectives are normal, but substantially different expectations may deserve a direct clarification before you advance.

Understand how decisions get made

Ask which decisions the role owns and which require approval. Request an example of a recent cross-functional decision: who contributed, who decided, and how the outcome was communicated.

This can help you understand the practical operating environment without asking the team to label its culture in a few flattering words. An example often provides more information than a slogan.

Explore the support available

Ask about the team, resources, onboarding, and the relationship with the person or group overseeing the role. What support has been effective for previous leaders? Where would the new executive need to build capability or repair a process?

You can also ask how progress will be reviewed in the first several months. Clear checkpoints make it easier to understand the expectations you would be accepting.

Choose questions that connect to your genuine assessment of the opportunity. You do not need to deliver a long prepared list at every meeting. Build on what you have heard, note what remains unclear, and use the final stages to resolve the issues that would materially affect your decision to join.
